Project Extend

About Project Extend

For low-income older adults who live in their own home, Project Extend performs home repairs at no cost to help them maintain independence, dignity and safety. For many of our clients, the only alternatives are to sell the home they worked so hard to acquire–or to live in dangerous conditions. With help from volunteers and funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the City of Atlanta, Project Extend makes the difference. The program has operated since 1992 and was strongly promoted by the late Mayor Maynard Jackson.

How We Work

Project Extend performs a wide range of home repair jobs including painting, carpentry, plumbing leaks, floor replacements, drywall repair, building or rebuilding steps, furnace installation, electrical work, installation of railings and handicap ramps, roof leaks and yard work. Volunteer groups of 6 to 12 persons are ideal for handling these types of repairs. Training is available for volunteers interested in coordinating volunteer repair teams.

Can I Qualify for Home Repair?

To be eligible, an individual must be an Atlanta homeowner age 60 or older, or disabled, with a limited income and a need for home repairs that exceed ability to pay. The homeowner must carry homeowners insurance.

Currently approximately 300 applicants are approved and waiting for repairs. Acceptance of new applications will resume as the waiting list shrinks. Exceptions are made where possible for homeowners cited by the City of Atlanta under its Beautification Ordinance. Call Yvette Foucha for more information, 404-872-0086 Ext 16.

A Great Volunteer Experience

From a single day of light repair, to a multi-day roof replacement, Project Extend offers a wonderful opportunity for volunteers. The joy and appreciation of homeowners compounds the satisfaction of a job well done.

Each summer we welcome organizations from throughout the country as well as local volunteers. Our hope is to expand into spring and fall seasons with roof repairs and other larger projects.

For persons interested in directing repair projects as a volunteer coordinator, training is provided by Charles Bonner, Project Extend director.

Contact Yvette Foucha, 404-872-0086, or yvette@wesleycenters.org to discuss the volunteer opportunities of Project Extend.
